With integrated functional safety features, the ACS380 drive can become part of the machine’s safety system via PROFIsafe via PROFINET, ensuring the safe stopping of the motor when necessary. The drive’s software can be easily customized with Adaptive programming to meet any specific application requirements. The drive is suitable for industries such as food and beverage, material handling and the textile industry. Typical applications include mixers, conveyors, EOT and tower cranes, extruders and textile machinery.
► Suitability for Various Application Areas
► Strong Cyber Security
Omnidirectional communication
ACS380-E is compatible with all major automation ecosystems.
► The driver comes with internal Ethernet communication.
► Profinet IO RT supports Ethernet protocols such as EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP.
► Commissioning can be easily done via Ethernet.
► Remote maintenance and control is possible with remote access support.
► Software (FW) updates and parameter backup can be made via Ethernet.
► Provides high performance communication and motor control.
► Internal input/output (I/O) support is available for typical machine applications.
Increasing cyclic data words up to 24 significantly expands process data exchange between PLC and drive. This enables more detailed real-time monitoring—torque reference, actual torque, speed feedback, DC link voltage, temperature values, fault codes—all transmitted within tight control cycles. In high-dynamic applications such as cranes or extruders, richer cyclic data improves control loop precision and diagnostics. However, higher communication bandwidth also demands proper network segmentation and QoS planning. Otherwise, control traffic may compete with non-critical Ethernet traffic, affecting determinism in time-sensitive operations.
Hardware Support for Faster Communication
ACS380-E is equipped with high-speed USB-C to PC interface:
► Drive Composer software offers quick access to software (FW) installations.
► With cold configuration, configuration can be made even when the drive is de-energized.
► Computer connection can be made without powering the drive.
Cold configuration capability introduces practical advantages during panel manufacturing and commissioning stages. Drives can be parameterized in advance without applying mains voltage, reducing electrical risk during setup. For OEMs producing machines in series, this shortens commissioning time and standardizes configuration quality. Firmware consistency across multiple units also becomes easier to manage. A controlled firmware baseline prevents unexpected behavior differences between production batches—something that can otherwise complicate troubleshooting in the field.
Highlighted Technical Features
► Internal 2×100 Mbps Ethernet port (Provides fast and flexible connections)
► PROFINET IO RT, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP support
► Commissioning, software update and remote access via Ethernet
► Communication capacity has been improved by increasing the number of cyclic data words up to 24.
Supporting multiple motor technologies within a single platform requires advanced motor control algorithms inside the drive firmware. Induction motors rely on accurate slip estimation, while permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors depend on precise rotor position information, often obtained via encoder or sensorless estimation techniques. Each motor type has different current dynamics and torque production characteristics. The drive must adapt control parameters accordingly to maintain stable torque response and minimize ripple. From an engineering perspective, this flexibility reduces inventory complexity for machine builders but increases the computational and tuning sophistication inside the drive.

Designed for Various Application Areas
ACS380-E is a product designed for use in a wide variety of applications.
► “All-compatible” platform – learn once, use anywhere.
► Supports asynchronous (IM), permanent magnet (PM), servo motor (PM servo) and synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors.
► It can serve different applications with the same product: It can be expanded with Input/Output (I/O), encoder, thermistor and security options.
Strong Cyber Security
To comply with future regulations and protect users’ system security, ACS380-E offers the following security infrastructures:
► It is already ready for future regulations with SL2 compatibility (Security Level 2).
► Only software produced by ABB can be run on the drive.
These features protect system integrity at both hardware and software levels and secure users’ digital infrastructures against external threats. In this way, both physical security and digital security are ensured at the same time.

Improved Engine Control and Durability
ACS380-E offers advanced motor control algorithms for asynchronous (IM), permanent magnet (PM), servo (PM Servo) and synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors. These control algorithms manage motor torque and speed with high accuracy, increasing the overall process performance of the machine with faster cycle times and lower oscillation values.
Improvement in motor control timing makes a difference, especially for dynamic applications. Thus, ACS380-E provides superior control in both production lines requiring high speed and systems requiring high precision. The performance of the system is increased with the newly developed variable switching frequency feature.
Longevity and Reliability Oriented Design
Produced in accordance with ABB’s quality and reliability standards, ACS380-E has hardware that is resistant to the harsh conditions of industrial environments. The ability to operate smoothly at ambient temperatures up to 50°C, relative humidity up to 95% and at altitudes up to 4000 meters makes the ACS380-E suitable for every climate and industry.
The internal brake and external resistor connection option inside the drive enables the kinetic energy of the motor to be distributed efficiently in applications requiring high acceleration and deceleration. This extends the life of the system.
Integrated Safety Functions STO
The Safe Torque Off (STO) feature of the ACS380-E is one of the basic safety mechanisms that ensure operator safety. Compliant with EN ISO 13849-1: PL e, IEC 61508: SIL3 and IEC 62061: SIL CL3 standards, this safety function prevents unexpected movements by completely cutting off the torque production of the motor. STO function is standard.
Remote access to the drive can be achieved with tools offered by ABB such as Drive Composer 3, and parameter backup and restore operations can be performed on a file basis over Ethernet. These tools also support functions such as fault diagnosis, live monitoring and firmware updates.
Thanks to the new generation USB-C connection, parameter configuration can be made even when the drive is not powered. This feature, called cold configuration, allows maintenance engineers to easily perform configuration operations in the field. Additionally, the drive remembers the parameter backup source, making maintenance processes safer and more traceable.

Installation and Application Flexibility
The ACS380-E series is available in four sizes ranging from R1 to R4, with the power range optimized for each body. While the R1 frame starts from 0.37 kW, the R4 frame offers solutions up to 22 kW. By keeping the height and depth constant for each body, panel design is simplified.
Quick wiring can be done thanks to the spring terminal connections on the driver. Daisy-chain Ethernet connection eliminates the need for an external switch.

Application Areas: In Every Corner of the Industry
ACS380-E drives can be widely used in many different areas, some of which are as follows:
► Food and beverage industry: Bottling, filling and labeling lines
► Packaging industry: Automatic winders requiring high precision speed and torque control

Cybersecurity in modern drives extends beyond password protection. With Ethernet-enabled commissioning and remote access features, secure boot mechanisms, encrypted communication channels, and role-based access control become critical. A compromised drive in an automated production line is not only a safety concern but also a production continuity risk. Network isolation strategies, firmware authenticity verification, and controlled remote access policies should be considered during system architecture design. As drives evolve into intelligent network nodes, electrical performance and digital resilience become equally important design parameters.
